‘Sometimes even funny’ - Anonymous, 2019

Maybe you’re wondering why this website is called ‘siskiyoucedar’. Long story short, in 2013 I bought a bar of soap with the same name. I liked the soap. The syllables stuck with me, gave me a username in the age of social media, and so the beat goes on. It was raw coincidence.

It’s a bit of a wild segue, but I think that exactly this happenstance serendipity is what we should be engaging with as academics. We discover things: sometimes on purpose, sometimes by accident, sometimes together, sometimes alone. What unites us is that we’re always open to the possibilities.

‘A good way to rid one’s self of a sense of discomfort is to do something. That uneasy, dissatisfied feeling is actual force vibrating out of order’ - William Morris

Given that we have our eyes open to so many possible futures, I think the driving force of academia should be to show where meaningful change should be happening and help point society in that direction. For as long as science and politics are intertwined, we have to do our best to tip the scales in favour of those who need our help the most. Another world is possible.
